15But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
…
43The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low.
44He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. (Deuteronomy 28:15-44, King James Version)
Today, I noticed the MSNBC.com article “The 8 lowest-paying jobs in America”. The first 2 paragraphs say it all quite well:
The United States may soon have to replace the expression, “the land of opportunity,” with “the land of low wages.”
While the job market may still look grim for those looking to replace their good-paying office or manufacturing jobs, opportunities are expected to abound for a host of jobs paying less than $10 an hour, everything from cashiers to home care aides.
Ancient Israel repeatedly refused to heed God’s warnings about obedience, and it looks like the current descendants of those people are not going to heed either. The fate of ancient Israel was war, destruction and slavery. It appears that this fate awaits modern Israel as well.
