Avatar Now

We watched Avatar yesterday. It has some neat special effects. It is a story about how “The Corporation” is greedily taking land away from a basically helpless people on a distant planet so they can mine some mineral of great worth. It is a story line that has been done before, although in keeping with the times Avatar has an ecological or “green” angle.

Of course, we have banks and other institutions stealing away people’s homes now. They, in cahoots with our federal government, made a bunch of bad loans. They caused a financial mess in which innocent people lost good paying jobs, and thus cannot pay their own mortgages. The few who are left working are supposed to help pick up the tab, of course.

Crown Financial Minstries is fond of quoting Proverbs 22:7, and it rings very true.

Banks and mortgage companies have exerted their power and influence to make themselves rich at others’ expense. Our own government has decided that taxpayers should be the ones to shoulder the burdens of mistakes made by the banks and federal government. Corruption and greed are like a cancer on society.

Have we learned from our mistakes? Apparently, not. In fact, we are now further rewarding the greedy and incompetent.

The AP reported Thursday that “Fannie, Freddie CEOs set for $6 million payday”.

Father, forgive me, for I am having difficulty praying for a government that is not only corrupt but encourages corruption amongst the powerful and wealthy and leaves the poor destitute and takes homes from them so that others may enrich themselves.
