92 It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High:
~ Ps 92:1
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
~ 1Th 5:18
It is interesting that Paul gave the Thessalonians instruction to give thanks “in”, not necessarily “for” but “in”, everything, and it is sandwiched between the exhortation to pray without ceasing and “Quench not the Spirit.” Does this imply that if we cease to pray, if we fail to do “the will of God” by giving thanks that this leads to quenching the Spirit? Perhaps.
This I do know: It could always be worse. No matter what you may be going through, there is room for gratitude. It is easy to give thanks in the good times, but often God wants to know if we can give thanks in the tough times.
The Psalmist was clear that it is a “good thing” to praise God, and Paul was clear that it is “the will of God” to give thanks in all things.
